Previously, it used to cost a certain number of SLP(depending on Breed Count), and 2 Axie Infinity Shards(AXS) per Axie. But due to their continuous updates to stabilize the Axie Infinity economy, it now costs 1 AXS per Axie.
The update that adjusted AXS to breed was made to potentially help prevent the over-inflation of Axies (due to the huge increase of breeders), and to increase the usage and utility of AXS tokens.
Final Thoughts
Assuming that Axie Infinity players(hence more breeders) continue to increase, expect the Axie Infinity developers and the Axie Infinity decentralized autonomous organization(DAO) to be advocating for updates to potentially make breeding more expensive.
While this is going to be unfortunate for the breeders, these updates are made to help the Axie Infinity economy, and to make sure that the game remains decently profitable in the long term.
